Cipro and Anthrax

Q)Should I try to stock up on CIPRO, just in case of an anthrax outbreak?

A. This is a bad idea on many levels. In the first place, to date, there have been very few verified anthrax cases since September 11th. There has been much media hype and much fear, but the reality is, there have only been a few cases reported.

Secondly, Cipro, like most prescription drugs, has a very specific purpose. If you take Cipro for other things, things it was not intended to be used for, you are not only leaving yourself unprotected for the illness you are trying to cure, but you are building up an immunity to the Cipro, should you need it at a later date.

Cipro is often prescribed for respiratory problems (URI, pneumonia, etc.) but will do you absolutely no good in the event of a cold or flu.

In addition, Cipro is expensive. Your average 20-day supply will cost in the vicinity of $120.00.

Finally, there are people who genuinely need this drug. Although I have heard nothing of a shortage it would be unconscionable to hoard a drug "just in case" and allow people with a genuine and immediate need to go without.
